Zotero: manage paper dem for different device dem

Near the end of ma first MSc year, during the CENG promotion days for summer 2024, one research assistant colleague introduce Zotero to me. Before that time, I don change the way I dey manage paper dem several times, but the different parts of the system no really work together.

I start with printed paper dem. For digital copy dem, I keep paper dem inside folder dem for ma Drive and computer, and I synchronize dem by masef. After I buy iPad, I start to send paper dem to Goodnotes 6 and arrange dem inside folder dem there. At the same time, I still keep copy dem for Drive and ma computer. The annotated versions remain inside Goodnotes and ein cloud storage, wey I access through the Apple ecosystem for that time. Because of this, the same paper and ein annotations fit scatter for several places.

Zotero give me one workflow wey dey more united. I start with the desktop application for ma Lenovo computer, the Zotero Connector for Chrome, and the Zotero app for iOS and iPadOS. Later, I also start to use the official Zotero app for Android for ma Samsung phone. Now I get one library for collect paper dem, arrange dem, read and annotate PDF dem, and access the same research material from different device dem.

Synchronization and storage

Zotero separate library data from attachment file dem. According to Zotero ein sync documentation, synchronization for library item dem, note dem, link dem, and tag dem dey free and unlimited. PDF dem and other attachment file dem use one separate file-syncing option. Zotero Storage include 300 MB free, and dem get larger paid plan dem. I dey pay for Zotero Storage now because na the most direct option for ma workflow.

One free alternative dey for personal-library attachment dem: Zotero fit use one compatible WebDAV service. This no mean say you must run your own server; one institution or third-party provider fit provide WebDAV storage. WebDAV no support file dem inside Zotero group library dem, and Zotero provide only limited support for third-party server dem. Zotero also warn make person no put ein database directory directly inside cloud-synced folder like Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive because this fit corrupt the database.

For me, Zotero ein main benefit no be only to store PDF dem. E reduce the number of separate places wey I must manage, and e keep the paper, ein bibliographic information, and ma annotations inside the same research workflow.
